The third day turned out to be a down day, so we made a meteorological hadj to Norman, OK to see the National Weather Center. We did a total of 268 miles from Lawton, OK to Wichita, KS. We got on the road just before 9am CDT and made our way to Norman, OK to see the National Weather Center; home to SPC, the Norman NWS WFO, and the Oklahoma School of Meteorology. The facilities were absolutely amazing. The only comparison I can think of for how I felt seeing SPC is: it's like the first time was ever at Yankee Stadium. Yes, I am that much of a nerd :) Outside the NWC Only at the NWC will you find a radar chillin in the parking lot Mobile radar gets the thumbs up! Fountain in front of the NWC A converted ambulence the NSSL uses for sciencey type purposes Another mobile radar SPC, drool The Norman NWS WFO Sign outside the SPC ops floor, drool again University of OK School of Meteorology After our sweet tour of the NWC facilities we had lunch at an awesome BBQ place called Rudy's. This was painted on the wall outside the bathrooms. And this is what Rudy's looked like from the outside. If you ever find yourself in Norman, OK you must go there. I snapped a couple pictures on the way out of town. The "Welcome to Norman" sign The water tower There was also a bit of some tom-foolery between vans. Griff stole Vanessa's bunny Chastity and Zach made a duct-tape noose to hang him in the window. This is what happens when meteorologists don't have any weather to look at. This was also the day that I finally began to understand what "big sky" means. I had never seen so much nothing in my entire life... until we got to North Dakota, that is. Just before 5pm CDT we crossed the border into Kansas. We arrived at the Comfort Inn in Wichita around 5:30pm CDT |
